Projects - Power up the Lighthouse!

Critical Need - Roof and Interior Gutter System Failure.

The Historical Preservation Architect/Engineer for the State of Oregon recently did an assessment of the structure. He discovered the copper interior gutter system has deteriorated and water is intruding into the lighthouse and seeping into the plaster, mortar and bricks. This is now putting the structural integrity of the entire structure at risk. The roof is at the end of its life and is missing shingles. This issue has become an emergency project. The construction documents are being prepared. Once completed, it will go out for bids. It is estimated that the cost will be approximately $100,000.

At a time when Oregon State Agency budgets have been seriously cut, we are hoping for support from lighthouse lovers and the local community to assist in funding this urgent project to save the lighthouse.

Restoration Project - Phase 1:    Getting Power to the Lighthouse

Phase one will bring critically needed electrical power to the lighthouse which will provide lighting, heat and dehumidifier for the interior of the lighthouse. Moisture control is critical to stop further deterioration of the interior of the lighthouse. This phase will bring power from the Bullard’s State Park Horse Camp to the lighthouse a distance of approximately 2 miles.

Phase one of the restoration project is still in planning as we wait for availability of the ODPR engineer to prepare the specs for this project. As the lighthouse is not a critical infrastructure project, state funding is not available. Our team is working to raise the necessary funds and to receive stakeholders’ approval before the project can begin.

The full restoration project with include:

1. Installing power, water and communications which will prevent decay and mold in the interior.

2. Restore the Lantern Room. It needs to be completely removed, repaired, water sealed with new windows and railing. Add a Fourth Order Fresnel lens.

3. Replace the Entrance door and hardware.

4. Repair exterior steps and replace the handrails.

5. Repair the foundation.

6. Repair the stucco finish.

7. Repair the cracks and remove rust stains.

8. Paint the lighthouse.
